Making the Educational Laws Work for You

[Image of scales of justice, gavel and law books]

Almost every time there is a story about special education in the news, two laws are mentioned, the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Both of these laws are long and complex, but contain valuable information for parents and teachers who are navigating through the special education process.

IDEA ensures that all students receive a free and appropriate public school education. Some of the law’s main areas of focus are: Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), student placement, evaluations and special education eligibility. For more information on IDEA, visit:

U.S. Department of Education Home Page:
http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get?_A=11495&_U=11514

IDEA Partnership:
http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get?_A=11495&_U=11515

NCLB is a comprehensive education reform law that challenges the educational system to use proven methodologies to:

  • Close the achievement gap between disadvantaged youth and their
    non-disadvantaged peers
  • Be accountable for learning outcomes
  • Provide parental choice
  • Strengthen teacher quality

Funding to support NCLB is specifically targeted for schools with high populations of disadvantaged youth and those not demonstrating annual yearly progress. For more information about NCLB, visit:

U.S. Department of Education Home Page:
http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get?_A=11495&_U=11516

No Child Left Behind Section of the US Department of Education Site:
http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get?_A=11495&_U=11517

For more information on IDEA, NCLB and all special education law and advocacy, visit the information and resource website Wrightslaw at http://m1.rfbd.org/mk/get?_A=11495&_U=11518.

New, Improved ASA Web Site “Goes Live”

ASA re-launched its top-visited Web site, http://www.autism-society.org/, today. Long the premier source for reliable information on autism spectrum disorders, our newly designed website provides an interactive visitor experience with a vibrant new design and easy-to-use navigation aids to help you quickly find what you’re looking for. ASA worked with Convio to create a design that would build on its strong constituent-driven (CRM) platform, with the goal of engaging and building the community it serves.
