ADA 19th Anniversary

ADA 19th Anniversary

 Sunday, July 26, 2009

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the most comprehensive federal civil rights statute protecting the rights of people with disabilities.

On September 25, 2008, the President signed the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 ("ADA Amendments Act" or "Act").

The Act changes definition of disability by rejecting several Supreme Court decisions that narrowed the definition of disability. With the ADAAA Congress intends the ADA to cover a broad range of individuals that have been discriminated against because of disability. It became law on January 1st of 2009.

For more information see the Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center (DBTAC). DBTAC provides assistance to the National Network of ADA Centers.

The Southeast ADA Center is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Web site: www.sedbtac.org

CELEBRATING INCLUSION

darienkarate.jpg

Darien (in lower left corner) in his "goofy" karate class photo.  All student had just moved up in rank.  The instructors as well as the other students in his class are getting a real education on what "Celebrate Inclusion - All People All The Time" really means.  Darien is treated as just another student in the class.  Questions are asked and answered and he has been accepted by everyone.  He is actually often the comic relief with his witty statements.

FIRST ANNUAL
CELEBRATE INCLUSION
GOLF TOURNAMENT
Our first annual golf tournament was held on December 1, 2007 at the Bluffs Golf Course in Zolfo Springs.  The golfers played 18 holes and were treated to dinner when they were done.  There were many raffle prizes generously donated by area businesses and a 50/50 drawing.  Trophies were given to the top team with cash prizes for the top three teams.  We had a special tee-off by Darien (Terry's grandson) and his father.  We will be having our second golf tournament in March of 2009.  Information will be provided on our website when arrangements are finalized.

Hello Little Darien

What do you know?

How will you grow?

Who will you know?

Hello Little Darien

What would you say?

If your first words

 Were this day

Hello Little Darien

What will you see?

Who will you met?

What will you grow-up to be?

With love,

 DAD (Stephen West)

MISSION STATEMENT

To promote inclusive communities where all people belong.

Our mission is to provide helpful information and resources to enhance the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities and the community as a whole.

Make the regular environments of our community special for everyone by helping them become accessible to the needs of a diverse population

Project a positive image of children and adults with disabilities

Promote practices that improve the quality of life for all people with disabilities

Provide information, resources, educational materials and training on inclusion and issues that effect the disabled. This would benefit  the individual, children, parents, teachers, school administrators, service providers, businesses, therapists, recreational facilities and many other areas of our community

Educate the public about the exceptional population and how inclusion will benefit everyone

Our goal is for all people to be a part of what every person wants to be, INCLUDED. We want all people to understand that having a disability is but one small part of the whole person. We are more similar than we are different.
